It's easy to use and has an incredible support system. We found Microsoft Money to be clumsy, difficult to use and uninspired so we tossed it out. I usually write everything down with pen and paper. I bought this because of other reviews and will say I am glad I did.
The paycheck I deposit on November 1 will not be spent until December 1 at the earliest. That means that all of the money I am spending in November is money that I received the month before, in October.
I loved the feeling that Jesse was talking to me. I loved the YNAB 10 day eCourse. Why would you purchase a program that has a 360 page 'For Dummies' book written for it" And I am so very glad that I did. Ok, so cheesy title jokes aside, the reality is you DO need a budget and YNAB should be your choice. Most people think knowing their expenses is the same as having a budget, but it's not.
Online Bill pay is provided free by most banks now and, if you want to just keep track of your account balances, is a great solution. But if you need to finally get hold of your financial situation, you need a budget. After a month of heavy use with the app, I only encountered one very minor bug, and it was fixed 2 days later in a software update that was pushed to me. YNAB is easily head and shoulders above either of those programs. In just 5 months I have completely rid myself of all credit card debt, have paid off some expensive orthodontic work from last year, and have just one payment left on my student loans (a total of nearly $6,000 worth of debt). With that last payment I will be completely debt free for the first time since getting my first credit card at age 18. I was skeptical that this would provide what I wanted. I've tinkered with this program for 4 of those days.
The most recent version of the software, which I received as a free download after having purchased the software about ten months ago, has added a ton of great features that help make the software easier to use. Why didn't I give the product 5 stars" For a while, I learned to write macros in Excel and started creating my own envelope system spreadsheet, but I was always searching for something else to make things simpler. Apparently the Quicken 2008 will allow for a more envelop budgeting experience, but I'm not going back. YNAB fits the bill perfectly. After an intensive couple days setting up and learning the software, we now have a real budget for the first time in our lives.
As a software developer myself, I am amazed at the attention to detail and effort put into the application on top of the base functionality. The program not only does what it was designed to do, it does it almost to perfection. As soon as the file has been downloaded, YNAB imports it automatically. It's a little extra work, but certainly not excessive.
