Driving Directions: Mapquest

By John Ohiggins

Map Quest is an online provider of free driving directions and high quality maps, I've personally been using Mapquest directions for more than 10 years, I think I started using this service in 1999, but to be honest I can't remember. This great web mapping service has lots of tools that have helped me save hundreds of miles, and also a lot of money.

This site is probably one of the oldest online mapping websites, I think that MQ was launched in 1996, but I think that Rand McNally is the only online mapping website that's older than AOL's popular internet mapping site. It's really amazing that after more than 15 years this service is still considered one of the best. Google Maps is also a great online mapping website, I probably use it as much as Map Quest, and I think that their driving directions service is just as accurate.

This online mapping website can be accessed through any mobile phone, or any other mobile device that allows you to browse the web, you can access this service through your phone's web browser, another option is to download the official MQ app for mobile, the app is free, but you can only download it if you have an Android or iPhone phone.

The vast majority of drivers that use the internet know that the driving directions MQ offers are very accurate, they are also very quick and easy to follow. I've been a loyal user of this service for many years, it has never disappointed me, in fact, the service is so good that I even convinced my dad of using it, and my dad doesn't even know how to use computers!

Mapquest was the first internet mapping site that I ever used, after using MQ for the first time I became very interested about online mapping softwares, and since then I have used most of the free online mapping sites that are available to us. Now I'm quite familiar with sites like Yahoo Maps, Bing Maps, Expedia, Via Michelin, Rand McNally, and many more, but my favorite alternative to AOL's online mapping service is definitely Google Maps.

If you are located in the European continent, don't worry, because you can use Via Michelin, which is perhaps the most utilized online mapping service in Europe, this site also provides free driving directions, and high quality interactive maps. There's another popular internet mapping site in Europe known as Mappy, the only problem with Mappy is that it is only available for french speaking countries, while V. Michelin is available worldwide.
